Watercolour Series: Animal Totem

Many cultures believe that the energy of an animal can be your spirit guide. You might feel yourself attracted to specific traits that an animal can posses, and feel a kinship to their being.

I believe that all things are connected, and I am deeply aware of all the interacting energies around me. Through dreams and meditations I am gifted with beautiful creative visions, and when these visions are of animals, I feel a spiritual need to explore the idea by reading about them, and by painting a special depiction of what I see.

Do you have a favorite animal?

Watercolour Series: Smoky Lake Farm

This is Breauzart’s 6 watercolour painting series called The Smoky Lake Farm Series.

Inspired by a farm owned by my family in Smoky Lake Alberta, these paintings are created in soft dreamy watercolour paint applied to paper to express my childhood memories spent on this farm in the 1980s. It is also an invitation for people to reflect on community and our own local farms.

In July 2021 the opportunity to go back to this farm arouse after the passing of my uncle, the owner of the property. He was a hard working man as Alberta farmers are known to be, growing crops and raising typical farm animals such as cows and chickens. I can still recall the sweetness of the fresh vegetables at dinner pulled from the garden, normally children hate veggies, however when they are full of the flavour that they should have, packed with the nutrients of the organic soil, they became a joy to eat. We also enjoyed the amazing taste of free range chicken, and beef, the healthy flavour of these meats grown on this farm was a lesson to me on the craft of carefully, humanly raised animals.

My cousins and I would slip on the thick rubber boots lined up just outside the front door, run across the enormous space between the house and the barn to find the kittens and play with them in the barn’s loft. My aunt would sit on a short stool to milk the cow. She was nice enough to let me try, but my tiny hands were not strong enough to entice a drop of milk from the utters. The cats would surrounds us, meowing, staring widely licking their lips. Some even tried to crawl into the milk bucket. They had to wait their turn, and my aunt would generously share this treat for their breakfast. After that we moved to the chicken coop. There was a very special recipe for the chicken’s meal, and fresh milk was one of the ingredients. The chickens were so well looked after that they grew to the size of turkeys. They ran around the yard, eating bugs, and finding yummy things in the compost pile, nothing was wasted on the farm, everything had it’s use. We were always escorted by the large dogs Fred, Monty and Herbie out into the endless fields, or up to the tree line when we climbed into the tree fort. It was cool up there sheltered from the sun’s heat. We would refresh ourselves drinking from the well’s icy water extracted from the ground via a pump’s handle. That was the only way that I could drink this water, it was so iron rich with too strong a smell to drink at warmer temperatures. At night, after the day’s intense heat, there would be spectacular thunderstorms, booming and shaking the earth. In the city the building and street lights hide the sky. Out there the sky was openly visible, you could see the stars, the constellations, and the moon would light the yard so bright it was as though it had it’s own natural street lights,

Going back in July 2021 I was surprised at how small everything looked. The only thing unchanged was the sky. A brand new beautiful house had been built in the middle of the enormous yard between the old farm house, and the other farm buildings. There are no longer any animals, except for 2 cats. The fields are rented out to other farmers to grow crops. But this is a quiet peace. No sounds of traffic, no sirens blaring, airplanes, or leaf blowers. Just wind, birds, leaves shuffling together in the trees. I took my paper, paint and brushes to the tall grasses near the now unused chicken coop, sat down in the softest part of the lawns and began to sketch out my plan. I was routinely interrupted by a playful kitten, but the more magical of interruptions would be the orange butterflies. I would find myself covered in them, as well as my paper, and my brush handle and this is when I would pause to listen to the wind, breathe softly, acknowledge this amazing blessing. The gifts that nature delivers us in the form of food in all different varieties, the flowers and trees. Two of my cousins went on to become bee farmers, and so my family members continue to be responsible for maintaining the earth. They provide food and nutrients to many people who live in cities and contribute actively in their community in positive and meaningful ways. To be a farmer is to not be afraid of working hard, no matter how you feel. There is no calling in sick when it is time to harvest, or when your animals need attention. It is a complicated calling with many risks such as getting hurt, crop failure, rising gas prices etc. This community relies heavily upon one another while those of us who get their groceries from the local super market don’t think twice about where any of those produces originate from, maybe we don’t even know the name of our neighbour right next door.

These paintings are my childhood memories, but more importantly they are a big thank you to all the farmers that provide us with the food on our tables. I always look at the labels on the packaging and more often then not I make the choice to buy locally. In this way I am supporting my family, treating my community like family, and taking responsibility for my carbon foot print by purchasing products that are close to home, rather then transported from long distances. When I reflect on what is important for me to live my best life, nutritious food, safe, warm shelter, and honest reliable people are the foundation to be able achieve this best life.

I hope that you enjoy these paintings that were created to celebrate and thank our hard working Alberta farmers. I also hope that my memories inspire the viewer to reflect on our beautiful farm lands, and consider where and how our foods reach us as consumers.

Watercolour Series: The Wolf

February is considered The Wolf Month. This is because for most wolves throughout the world, this will be the breeding season. In February 2022, my mediations took my thoughts to the Wolf. My research into the lore led me to some wonderful stories celebrating this majestic, resourceful, loyal animal and inspired me to paint this series.

The Romans held a festival called Lupercalia. The name is thought to reference the Latin word lupus, which means wolf. The celebration was held on February 15th as a fertility rite, and in recognition of a she-wolf (Lupa) a deity that protected herds from wolves, but also rescued Rome’s founding twins as infants, Romulus and Remus. Here we have a caring mother figure in the form of a wolf willing to take on two innocent lives. This action would eventually lead to a great nation being created.

Romulus and Remus were not the only twins associated with a she-wolf. In Greek mythology Artemis and Apollo’s mother was Leto, an outcast who needed to find a place to give birth to her twins. A persevering and resilient mother, who hid in the guise of a wolf, going to great lengths to protect her young. Both twins were accomplished archers known as hunters, working with wolves on their adventures. However Apollo was known for representing the day, Artemis the night. A meditation on the darkness verses the light, or acknowledging what we can learn from our hidden inner self as we celebrate our obvious exposed self always on that hunt to grow into a better, wiser human being.

Staying with the theme of wolf twins, a Norse legend explains how the sun and the moon travel across the sky giving us day and night. Skoll and Hati chase the celestial orbs through the heavens, at some point they are expected to catch their assigned mass and this will be Ragnarok, or the end of the world. An interesting idea that brought my attention to “endings” and the exciting possibility of new beginnings.

These wolf paintings are a contemplation on life. Examining the inner thoughts of oneself, the effort put into growing and learning everyday, and being brave when times are challenging. Endings are the call to start over and create something new and beautiful. Perhaps I am the she-wolf that is nurturing her creativity, building my own imaginative world that welcomes a balance and acceptance of what is dark, and what is light. Watching the world while practicing a consistent awareness, capturing a painted moment of my own story.

I hope that you enjoy my wolf pack.

Mixed Media

Acrylic Owl Collage

This mixed media piece is created from paper painted with acrylic paint, and spray paint. I then cut shapes and fixed them onto thick paper in a patterned design to create an owl perched on a branch. There is a lot of texture, lines and colour variations that come together as a shimmery night scene hosting a bejeweled owl. This piece was very difficult to photograph because there is so much subtlety that is missed. If you are interested email me and I will try to send better pics.

Tamara Breau

Edmonton, Alberta’s Tamara Breau, is a self-published author and artist of three books titled The Book of Blue, The Book of Red, and most recently Conjure The Dreamer. These books are also available as E-Books through Amazon’s Kindle.

My art education happens in my free time, taking evening classes through the University of Alberta, as well as at-home studies. My favorite way to learn is to surround myself with skilled people and their art.

Whether it is painting in watercolour or acrylic, or a book of illustrations accompanied by spontaneous lines of prose, my creativity often comes to me through dreams and has a great need to manifest itself from nocturnal vision into awakened reality.

I believe that words and images carry power, and my desire is to create beauty, live in beauty, and spread positivity. Your actions, as well as your words, design your world and I will always try to contribute as positively as I can.

Breauzart has participated in Edmonton’s community art show Whyte Avenue’s Artwalk 2021 and 2022.

I will have my first solo exhibit at the Ness Gallery in Edmonton in 2023 featuring the Smoky Lake Farm Building series,
And know that I am open to commission pieces to provide a specific painting to fit your artistic needs.

I hope that you enjoy what I have made, thank you for your support.
Kind regards,

Tamara Breau
